Dolly the Nurse

This blog celebrates the selflessness and dedication of people in the public service.  You have already met Henry the Fireman, now let me introduce you to Dolly the Nurse.

Dolly used to be a beer lady at Newton Hawker Centre.  But after years of seeing men bankrupt their families and poison their livers, Dolly decided to change career and undo what harm she had helped bring about.  You see, Dolly has a heart of gold.  She is also very busy and so, difficult to photograph.  Here, she is caught rushing to another bedpan call in Ward 76.

Being already in her forties, it wasn't easy for Dolly to learn new skills and tone down her garish make-up.

But with the encouragement of her loved ones and subsidies from the Singapore Government, she finally graduated with a nursing diploma. So now instead of plying beer, she plies her trade as a nurse trainee at EH (Elizabeth Hospital, where age and gender are not discriminated against).

Dolly was so good with her charges that during the recent Nurses' Day, she even won an award.  Posters of her now line the corridors of EH.  She feels very proud of what she has achieved.

Hectic schedule and long hours notwithstanding, Dolly even found time to pick up ballet from her new friend, Valerie the Ballerina (remember her?).  Check out http://www.mystitchingdiary.wordpress.com/ and http://www.boredboringdiary.blogspot.com/ for more Dolly adventures.

So, for those of you who feel you are stuck in a career rut and are looking to do something meaningful for the remainder of your life, let Dolly be an inspiration to you!

Doll courtesy of EH, who knitted her in the record time of one week!  Looking forward to more of your creations, EH!
