MAYDAY! MAYDAY! WORKER DOWN!

WARNING:  This is a non-craft-related post.  Skip this if you're here for the crafts.  Visit our Shop instead (see instructions on top right corner of the blog).

coff, coff, gasp, wheeze.... that's it!  I guess what with the late nights, the running about, the non-stop consumption of mooncakes (so which is your favourite?), the juggling of both work (office) and work (craft), it is only a matter of time I succumbed.  Last night, to ease my cough...

I doused myself with cough syrup, rubbed ointment on my chest/neck and tied a handkerchief around my neck to keep it warm.

That got me thinking (I couldn't sleep from the cough)... whatever happened to those old-time home remedies that my mom used to treat me with.  What Manuka honey?  Last time, we only had Woods Peppermint Cough Syrup.  As for the ointment, it was Vicks, the panacea for all ailments, including helping to ripen stubborn pimples (especially those with embedded black heads).

So, this morning, I got out my various home remedies and started comparing between the old and new.

Nowadays, when my rheumatism acts up or I over-strain my muscles (ok, what little muscle I have), I reach for my Badger.  But last time, my mom would soak cotton balls and rub the affected parts vigorously with this for muscle pain (I know the chinese words say bones but who was I to question the wisdom of my mom)

and this for bones...

I don't know about you but I hate the smell of these ointments.  I would get so embarassed to go to school because everyone from a mile away can smell me before I appear.  I used to wrap up my ankle or knee with some  bandage to  hide the odour but to no avail.  Well, at least the bandage prevented the ointments from staining my clothes.  But I have to admit that the ointments are very effective.

Then when I had a pimple outbreak, out would come the trusty Hazeline Snow, every woman's all-in beauty cream.  It would moisturise, whiten, sun-protect and heal pimple scars.  I love the cooling feel and subtle smell of the cream.  Unfortunately, nowadays I can't find it anymore.  So I have to fork out $40 for a small bottle of pimple serum which serves no other purpose.

So here's a quiz for you.  Answer the following questions:-

(1) What did you use to apply for mosquito bites?  Clue:  it starts with the same letter as what I'm currently using.

 (2)  I now drink this for my Vitamin C and sugar fix.

But when I was young, another drink was very popular and its advertisement went like this:

Girl:  what are you drinking?
Boy: ______
Girl:  can I have some?
Boy:  yes, but not too much.

(by the way, there was a sublimal lesson for girls in that advertisement.  Never marry the man this boy grows up to be.  You will always be on the losing end)

(3)  I still use this for my stomach-aches.  But surely there is a less smelly and leaky alternative?

(4)  Last question and a tricky one:  how do you treat the common ailments of your children?  Don't tell me you don't know 'cos you left it to the grandparents or maid to do so. What kind of memories will you leave for your children?  They won't get to grow up and fill up precious internet space with frivolous ramblings like these.  Is this what you want for them, is this?

  3. Interesting post! I've a "slight" advantage over here! My family only use Ru Yee Yu when we were babeis. To be honest, it's actually more effective than Axe oil!
Ans: (1)Mpopiko (2)Ribena (3)Ru Yee Yu (4) Axe medicated oil
Axe oil is indeed very smelly but it's multi-purpose. It's use to treat motion sickness, headache, stomachache & even mosquitoes bites!

  4. Oops! Can I add another item to(4)? Besides Zambuk and Axe oil, almost every household in Singapore would have a Tiger Balm at home! It's used to relief aches & pains! But a lot of pple have used it to treat headache & mosquitoe bites too!
